O’Day 32 Aft Cabin 1977
Pictures are here.
I can’t believe I am having to sell this boat which I absolutely adore. However, I am
unexpectedly returning to the UK in September so she has to go… I can even provide
documentation of my move if you want to see how genuine and reluctant this sale is. I
have only owned her for seven months having spent some 9 months searching Florida
for the right boat. I spent a month putting a few things right and have been enjoying
using her regularly ever since.
She sails like a dream… ask any O’day 32 owner and they will tell you. I think (and I
know I am biased) that this is one of the best cruising designs ever, very stable and
comfortable and the aft cabin is rare on a boat this size. The headroom in the cabin is
about 6’ 6” which is exceptional. She draws only 3 foot 3 inches with the drop keel raised
(7 foot with it down but she hardly needs it down - at least where I sail on the Indian
River) – which is great for Florida coastal sailing. The Westerbreke 28 HP diesel is ultra
reliable, always starts without issue, moves the boat nice and swiftly when needed, does
not stall at low revs and is very efficient.
Recent work done (2009) listed below – I spent some $5000 in the few months I have
had her (all anticipated expenses when she was purchased) - doing all the main items
which needed attention or are just sensible on a boat this age, so you can see that I
really intended to keep this boat. I really don’t see any major expenses in the immediate
future – my next project was going to be to paint the non-slip deck areas, tidy up the
main head compartment and replace the shower, then the aft cabin could use some
cosmetic work and there is a tiny leak where the mast passes through the cabin roof. I
have also purchased a used wooden wheel to replace the stainless destroyer-style one
– but haven’t got around to fitting it yet… it will look really nice with the new varnished
cabin doors.
Bottom job – hauled out in February and bottom professionally scrubbed and re-
painted. At this time any blisters were professionally repaired (see photos). - $1,500.
Standing rigging professionally replaced February - $900.
New Cabin doors (both main and aft cabins) made by professional carpenter from marine
Teak with marine ply panels. I have yet to fit these so they are separate in the pictures -
$900
Both main (jib) winches replaced by professionally reconditioned units (exactly same
model as originals) - $400
Full Engine Service and inspection carried out by professional mechanic all
recommended work done March- $350
Two new marine batteries - $200
Main sheet and both jib sheets replaced - $200
New bilge pump, float and switch fitted - $100
All wood inside and out re-varnished 6 coats, deck (other than non-slip areas)
repainted. Fenders replaced, new anchor and chain, new boat hooks (3), new mooring
ropes, new cabin lights purchased but only half of them fitted so far (not a big job).
Asking $10,000.
